Hikaru Sulu was born to George Sulu and Yoshiko Hatoyama in
San Francisco, California (United States of America) in 2237. At a
young age, Sulu was always fascinated by space and the many secrets
behind it. His love for it grew even more when he toured the first
warp capable vessel in Starfleet, the Enterprise (NX-01) and he decided
that he wanted to become a pilot. He'd spent most of his childhood
on fishing boats and eventually worked his way up to hover vehicles
in no time, flying aircrafts before he was even a teenager. These
skills were put to good use when he finally attended Starfleet Academy.
He had no trouble making friends and his peers looked to him for advice
on how to improve their piloting skills. When the original helmsman of the
U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701), Lieutenant Gregory McKenna, was unable to
pilot the ship due to a case of lungworms, Sulu was first in line to take
over as the Chief Helmsman. Of course, he hadn't expected the crazy
adventure that came along with his newly assigned duties. His diligence
and expertise piloting during the attack on the Romulan mining
ship, the Narada, led to him eventually becoming the official helmsman
of the Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.
